CD Cover Analysis 3

This is a CD cover from one of my favorite artists, Jack Johnson. His music genre is represented through a use of colour mixed with text and images. The colours are warm and soft and the text used is used to blend in instead of standing out sharply. The image on the main CD front cover appears to be a silhouette of either Jack Johnson or someone relevant to him, is constructing something. At first glances it looks like a wave which represents Jack Johnson in one of the most simplest from possible.

Jack Johnson's childhood and history play a key role in his fans and the music he makes. Jack Johnson was brought up in Hawaii which and became a professional surfer at the age of 17. Water has alsways been a part of his life and he has always been around it. This is sustained through other albums and imagery that contain water. The way this is shown is this particular album case is by the use of the main most prominent image. It seems it is a wave that has been consturcted by pannels of wood. The idea of this been a wave is supported by the light blue in the background which conotates the sea and water.

The size, colour and font of the lettering has ben chosen for a specific reason. The font size is not too big so it does not dimonate the CD front cover but still attracts attention to it. It is simple yet effective because of the simplicity of the image and text fonts and size used together. Two strong contrasting colours are used together to make it stand out so effectivly. The name 'Jack Johnson' and the title 'To the Sea' are black and white which make it stand out on the strong contrasting background. The name of the album is possibly yet another connotation of water. Any fan of his will be able to spot this because they will know of his obvious career in water sports.

CD Cover Analysis 2

This is a CD cover from the band Snow Patrol and their album 'Open eyes'. This was released on 1 May 2006. The CD cover follows most of the simple conventions of any other CD cover. One of the obvious main features of a front cover is the imagery or design if not the only thing that attracts audiences attention. Contrasting colours are used to make the CD cover stand out. The image are first is not completley recognisable and noticable but this is what draws the audience in and makes them stare at the CD cover. They want to try and understand the image.

The image is of two people kissing against a sureal designed background. A range of tones and strengths of contrasting lines and colours are used. The greats a strange emotion which is supported but the use of imagry. The easiest way of attempting to describe Snow Patrols specific music genre would be emotinal, slow and gloomy. This is once again, supported by the use of colours and imagry. This particular albums is seems to be focused on the genre of love and romance. This is noticable by looking at the image on the front cover aswell as the song names chosen for the back of the CD cover.

The central image is clearly shown and is easy to udnerstand. There is a strange formation of lines, scratches and colours. There seems to be a red/peachy colour flowing between the two characters on the main CD front cover. This may be representing the albums songs list and possibly about what the album is saying and why it was made.

The song list listed on the back of the CD cover are set in a particular order for a purpose. It is almost listed as though is were telling a story through just the use of songs names positioned in a certain order. It appears to be going from good to bad. It starts with 'you're all i have' which is showing that there is some sign of passion and love weither it be family related or partner related. The song list slowly becomes more nad more negative as we go down the song list starting with 'it's begenning to get to me' which possibly might be representing the vunrability someone faces when they love someone. Another thing that is obvious, track number 4 'close your eyes' is followed up towards the end of the songs lsit by its opposite song, track 10 called 'open your eyes'. To finish off the entire song list, track 11 called 'the finish line'. The song lsit is representing the theme of the album, love and passion and the loss or feeling of eltting someone go. This helps to advertise the album and helps the listeners to understand what they are singing about.

CD Cover Anlaysis 1

This is a front cover of a CD from the artists Mika, which was released in 2007. The front cover at first sight is an attractive CD design. The colours and the symmetry in which the lines are formed, help make the images stand out and make it look as though it is coming out towards the viewer. The name of the artist 'Mika' is clearly visible and is noticeable straight away. This is one of the main conventions of a CD front cover. One of the other main conventions of a CD front cover have been followed. This is the name of the album, this is because this particular CD has Pacific album name.

The colours used on this CD front cover are very vibrant and colourful. This is done for several purposes. One of the main purposes of the colours are for commercial and advertising purposes. The bright colours are used cleverly and attract audiences attention, once they are drawn in by the colours they instantly see the name 'Mika' because of the way the text is arranged to be jumping out at you.

The second reason for the use of the vibrant colours is to indicate the genre of music. Mikas music follows under the genre under Pop, this genre is supported by the use of the colours which are supported with the imagery and text fonts. The colours used help to represent his moods that are given off in his songs. The bright vibrant colours help to portray happiness which is support by the use of specific imagery on the front cover.

The imagery used consists of very simple cartoon pictures which possibly represent his lifestyle and the way he lives, still living life as a child and never growing up. Another interpretation of the imagery could is simply to show how he lives his life. The use of flowers to show happiness in his life, and also the display of several couches and clocks to show he is a relaxed person. I have noticed that there are several arrows across the front cover going in different directions. Possibly these are indicating something, perhaps how he see's his life, he doesn't know where he is going or cant make his mind up about which direction to go. I think this CD front cover is a perfect example of a front cover that both advertises as well as portrays emotions through the use of colour which is support by imagery.

The back of the CD case is very simple and plain, as are most CD backs. They are there to simply show the list of songs available on the CD. The song names can play a key role in representing the genre further. The conventions are clearly followed on to the back of the CD cover. The songs list is on it along with the small print and websites. The theme is clearly followed through on to the back of the cover to help keep continuity withing the CD design.

Genre Essay

Genre is the term for any category of literature weather it be acted, read or performed as well as various other forms of art or culture. Genres are formed by conventions that change over time as new genres are invented and the use of old ones are discontinued. Often, works fit into multiple genres by way of borrowing and recombining these conventions.

The Genre of my particular music video is a mix between Rap / Reggae. This is shown by the use of lyrics throughout the song as well as the subtle beat alongside the lyrics. The genre of Rap / Reggae is also represented through the mis-en-scene in the music video.

Conventions of literature of any form is key to creating the specific genre. Since my music video has two different types of genres, I have two different sections of conventions. Firstly, Rap. Rap music videos are presented in such a way that would intimidate a particular type of person. Drug and Crime based cultures are what the rap genre is related with. The lyrics are key to the representation of the musician which form part of his/her image. Some of the most popular rap music videos are shown to be abusive or sexist towards women, Money and some form of personal wealth and some type of fame weather it be social popularity or media related. These conventions are all to represent that individual musician who wishes to be portrayed as that type of person to attempt to target that audience.

Reggae is much different compared to Rap, which is odd considering my music video contains parts of both genres. Reggae is presented in a much different way in terms of music videos and mis-en-scene. In fact, it is almost the opposite to the Rap convention I have discussed. Typical reggae conventions include some sort of peace. This is stereotypical because of the Jamaican legend, Bob Marley. Most of his songs included some sort of Love and Peace which was portrayed through his music videos. This helped to create his image as people see him and remember him as today. Some other typical conventions of this genre are the use of camera movements and decisions made. A small range of shots are made and the use of cuts are dramatically pulled back to stop any sudden movements to create uneasiness etc.

Genre can be shown in many different ways for different types of media that need to be generalised in to a genre. Genre can be sectioned down in to several sub-categories. These sub-categories help the audience to decide what film they want to see and experience dependant on the individuals mood at the present time. For example if the individual is in an emotion mood then he/she will go see a film that offers emotional pleasures. If the individual is in a optimistic lively mood they may go see one containing Visceral pleasures and the last genre pleasure is Intellectual pleasures.
