CD Cover Analysis 3
Jack Johnson's childhood and history play a key role in his fans and the music he makes. Jack Johnson was brought up in Hawaii which and became a professional surfer at the age of 17. Water has alsways been a part of his life and he has always been around it. This is sustained through other albums and imagery that contain water. The way this is shown is this particular album case is by the use of the main most prominent image. It seems it is a wave that has been consturcted by pannels of wood. The idea of this been a wave is supported by the light blue in the background which conotates the sea and water.
The size, colour and font of the lettering has ben chosen for a specific reason. The font size is not too big so it does not dimonate the CD front cover but still attracts attention to it. It is simple yet effective because of the simplicity of the image and text fonts and size used together. Two strong contrasting colours are used together to make it stand out so effectivly. The name 'Jack Johnson' and the title 'To the Sea' are black and white which make it stand out on the strong contrasting background. The name of the album is possibly yet another connotation of water. Any fan of his will be able to spot this because they will know of his obvious career in water sports.

CD Cover Analysis 2
This is a CD cover from the band Snow Patrol and their album 'Open eyes'. This was released on 1 May 2006. The CD cover follows most of the simple conventions of any other CD cover. One of the obvious main features of a front cover is the imagery or design if not the only thing that attracts audiences attention. Contrasting colours are used to make the CD cover stand out. The image are first is not completley recognisable and noticable but this is what draws the audience in and makes them stare at the CD cover. They want to try and understand the image.
The image is of two people kissing against a sureal designed background. A range of tones and strengths of contrasting lines and colours are used. The greats a strange emotion which is supported but the use of imagry. The easiest way of attempting to describe Snow Patrols specific music genre would be emotinal, slow and gloomy. This is once again, supported by the use of colours and imagry. This particular albums is seems to be focused on the genre of love and romance. This is noticable by looking at the image on the front cover aswell as the song names chosen for the back of the CD cover.
The central image is clearly shown and is easy to udnerstand. There is a strange formation of lines, scratches and colours. There seems to be a red/peachy colour flowing between the two characters on the main CD front cover. This may be representing the albums songs list and possibly about what the album is saying and why it was made.
The song list listed on the back of the CD cover are set in a particular order for a purpose. It is almost listed as though is were telling a story through just the use of songs names positioned in a certain order. It appears to be going from good to bad. It starts with 'you're all i have' which is showing that there is some sign of passion and love weither it be family related or partner related. The song list slowly becomes more nad more negative as we go down the song list starting with 'it's begenning to get to me' which possibly might be representing the vunrability someone faces when they love someone. Another thing that is obvious, track number 4 'close your eyes' is followed up towards the end of the songs lsit by its opposite song, track 10 called 'open your eyes'. To finish off the entire song list, track 11 called 'the finish line'. The song lsit is representing the theme of the album, love and passion and the loss or feeling of eltting someone go. This helps to advertise the album and helps the listeners to understand what they are singing about.

CD Cover Anlaysis 1
This is a front cover of a CD from the artists Mika, which was released in 2007. The front cover at first sight is an attractive CD design. The colours and the symmetry in which the lines are formed, help make the images stand out and make it look as though it is coming out towards the viewer. The name of the artist 'Mika' is clearly visible and is noticeable straight away. This is one of the main conventions of a CD front cover. One of the other main conventions of a CD front cover have been followed. This is the name of the album, this is because this particular CD has Pacific album name.
The colours used on this CD front cover are very vibrant and colourful. This is done for several purposes. One of the main purposes of the colours are for commercial and advertising purposes. The bright colours are used cleverly and attract audiences attention, once they are drawn in by the colours they instantly see the name 'Mika' because of the way the text is arranged to be jumping out at you.
The second reason for the use of the vibrant colours is to indicate the genre of music. Mikas music follows under the genre under Pop, this genre is supported by the use of the colours which are supported with the imagery and text fonts. The colours used help to represent his moods that are given off in his songs. The bright vibrant colours help to portray happiness which is support by the use of specific imagery on the front cover.
The imagery used consists of very simple cartoon pictures which possibly represent his lifestyle and the way he lives, still living life as a child and never growing up. Another interpretation of the imagery could is simply to show how he lives his life. The use of flowers to show happiness in his life, and also the display of several couches and clocks to show he is a relaxed person. I have noticed that there are several arrows across the front cover going in different directions. Possibly these are indicating something, perhaps how he see's his life, he doesn't know where he is going or cant make his mind up about which direction to go. I think this CD front cover is a perfect example of a front cover that both advertises as well as portrays emotions through the use of colour which is support by imagery.
The back of the CD case is very simple and plain, as are most CD backs. They are there to simply show the list of songs available on the CD. The song names can play a key role in representing the genre further. The conventions are clearly followed on to the back of the CD cover. The songs list is on it along with the small print and websites. The theme is clearly followed through on to the back of the cover to help keep continuity withing the CD design.

Genre Essay
The Genre of my particular music video is a mix between Rap / Reggae. This is shown by the use of lyrics throughout the song as well as the subtle beat alongside the lyrics. The genre of Rap / Reggae is also represented through the mis-en-scene in the music video.
Conventions of literature of any form is key to creating the specific genre. Since my music video has two different types of genres, I have two different sections of conventions. Firstly, Rap. Rap music videos are presented in such a way that would intimidate a particular type of person. Drug and Crime based cultures are what the rap genre is related with. The lyrics are key to the representation of the musician which form part of his/her image. Some of the most popular rap music videos are shown to be abusive or sexist towards women, Money and some form of personal wealth and some type of fame weather it be social popularity or media related. These conventions are all to represent that individual musician who wishes to be portrayed as that type of person to attempt to target that audience.
Reggae is much different compared to Rap, which is odd considering my music video contains parts of both genres. Reggae is presented in a much different way in terms of music videos and mis-en-scene. In fact, it is almost the opposite to the Rap convention I have discussed. Typical reggae conventions include some sort of peace. This is stereotypical because of the Jamaican legend, Bob Marley. Most of his songs included some sort of Love and Peace which was portrayed through his music videos. This helped to create his image as people see him and remember him as today. Some other typical conventions of this genre are the use of camera movements and decisions made. A small range of shots are made and the use of cuts are dramatically pulled back to stop any sudden movements to create uneasiness etc.
Genre can be shown in many different ways for different types of media that need to be generalised in to a genre. Genre can be sectioned down in to several sub-categories. These sub-categories help the audience to decide what film they want to see and experience dependant on the individuals mood at the present time. For example if the individual is in an emotion mood then he/she will go see a film that offers emotional pleasures. If the individual is in a optimistic lively mood they may go see one containing Visceral pleasures and the last genre pleasure is Intellectual pleasures.

Late Stages of Design
Further Experiments
This is my progression with text so far. I have added a simple next font to the CD cover which at first was simple and boring until i added a graffiti backdrop like i did the image. This created interesting attracting visuals. I now plan on developing this idea and possibly exploring things which may fill up the space e.g shapes, text etc.
This is the same image but has been slightly edited to have a range of graffiti in the background to back up the genre once again. Also once again, the bright colours of graffiti have been shown to keep the genre presentation.

My chosen music video song
For my music video i plan to include a large range of shots and then montage them all together. My idea is to give each and every shot a menaing and then montage all of the bits together to give a clear understanding of what the lyrics are representing. I want to make my video as individual as possible compared to the current music video that excists with the song. I have already began taking test shots of what i plan on doing. My next stage is to develop my storyboard further according to the recent changes i have made.

Music Video Analysis 3
''I can see widows and orphans through my tears
I know my call despite my faults
And despite my growing fears''
''So come out of your cave walking on your hands
And see the world hanging upside down
You can understand dependence
When you know the maker's land''
And I will change my ways''
And I won't let you choke
On the noose around your neck''
Music Video Analysis 2
This music belongs to Mathangi "Maya" Arulpragasam. The reason i have chosen this song to analyse is because i feel that it has some very stron lyrics and meanings behind it which are clearly visualy represented within the created music video.
This song is definitely written from MIA's perspective while in the US and the West. Visa-immigration issues, questioning the value of her art and her contributions to culture, poor job opportunities for immigrants, a belief that minorities are likely to be criminals, a general belief that immigrants are somehow bad for the economy, it's all there.
Mia's early life has strongly influcenced the lyrics chosen for this particular song. Mia grew up in a corrupted govermental system which created several different sterotypes to people with different skin colours or coming from a different country. She was sterotyped to be one of those individual 'immigrants' even though she was born and raised in south-london. The lyrics in this song strongly represent that.
The song starts with a very relaxing, trance type of beat. This may instantly represent the type of person she is. This also may be representing how she feels about the topic she is discussing within the lyrics. The opening shot is of paper planes flying towards the city. This is possibly representing the immigrants flying over from their country to the big city life. The opening lines ''i fly like paper, get high like planes'' may be showing one of the first signs of sterotyping towards people who come across over-seas, this is suggesting that maybe they're drug addicts or something to do with that sort of social identification. The second opening clip shows a man walking along with a suitcase which with worn run down clothes. This is helping to show what the song is about in more detail and to help people understand what the rest of the song is going to revolve around.
One of the second clips that show the particular sterotype Mia is singing about, is the group of clips which show her working in several different 'lower class' jobs that are not particually considered glamerous or well paid. These include shots of working in a convinience store stacking shelfs. Working in a burger van and also taxi driving. These are all sterotypes that people are commonly faced with and choose to accept it.
Several other sterotypes are represented through the use of different sounds throughout the song. These include sounds of a gun and sonds that represent money. One particular line '' All i wanna do is ( bang bang bang ) and a ( cashier opening sound ) and take ya money'' This is suggesting that the sterotype of immigrants are violent theifs along with the already exsisting sterotypes.
The use of camera movements, angles and shots through out the video are very simply but effectivly put together. The starting clips are edited to match the beat of the song all the way throughout. This gives the music video a large range of shots because so many cuts have been used to split up the clips.
There is another interpitation to this particular song which is to do with dealing with drug dealers and themordern corrupted american society who are compulsivly obsessed with making money. I have highlighted the lyrics to which i think may represent the second interpritation of drug dealing.
I fly like paper, get high like planes
If you catch me at the border I got visas in my name
If you come around here, I make them all day
I get one down in a second if you wait
Sometimes I feel sitting on trains
Every stop I get to I'm clocking that game
Everyone's a winner now we're making our fame
Bona fide hustler, making my name
All I want to do is BANG BANG BANG BANG!
And KA-CHING!
And take your money
Pirate skulls and bones
Sticks and stones and weed and bombs
Running when we hit them
Lethal poison through their system
No one on the corner has swagger like us
Hit me on my banner, prepaid wireless
We pack and deliver like UPS trucks
Already going to hell just pumping that gas

Audience Research
Do you think a music video is more dependant on the lyrics or just the music itself?
I asked this question with the intention of helping me pick my song or at least narrow down my options. 7 out of 10 people thought that a music video is dependant on the lyrics. I think the reason behind this is that people that enjoy music like to listen to the lyrics and try and understand what the artist is trying to say. Once they have heard the song and understood the lyrics they turn to the music video to see in more detail what the musician is trying to say. The other 3 people which said they thought the music video was dependant on the music itself are people who are not particularly interested in the music and just listen to it for social or convenience purposes.
Do you think that the music video can alter the popularity of the song?
The reason i asked this question was to try and understand how effective music videos are at advertising and promoting the artists music. 10 out of 10 people said no. I asked one of them why they though this and the answer was simple. If the song isn't good, a video is not going to change peoples opinion. This has helped me decide on how to make my music video. I should make it more towards the intention of creating the narrative in video form rather then trying to promote the music within the music video imagery.
Why do you watch music videos?
For this question i had a range of answers but have put them together and come up with an average answer. The most common answer was to do with watching it for pleasure and also to try and understand the song more. This question has helped me understand what i need to make my video like and understand why i would be making it.
Overall Outcome
I think that the Audience research that i have conducted above has helped me make a few simple decisions that will affect my final outcome of my music video. I may conduct more Audience research as i get deeper in to making my video.

Music Video Analysis
'The Cure' - are an English rock/indie band formed in Crawly West Sussex in 1976. The Cure are often identified with the Gothic rock sub genre of alternative rock, and are viewed as one of the form's definitive bands. Because of the genre of the music that the Cure produce, there lyrics will be suitable to fit the genre. the Cures idea of Gothic soft rock/Indie gives the lyrics much stronger meanings and they are enforced with much more force. Most of the Cures songs lyrics are often about some sort of loss or depression. There music is made to suit the depressive Gothic like genre in which the lyrics are representing.
The Cure have often been questioned about there music videos. These questions and judgements have been based on both Quality and relevance. When Tim Pope came along, that changed for the better. There videos became more popular and more viewed the ever. This promoted there band massively and eventually lead them to be the first Gothic rock/indie band to go mainstream. This particular video is very simple in terms of complexity and graphic display but there is a wide range of meaningful animation which could represent several different things, meanings or personality, lifestyle traits.
Mise-en-Scene
The music video is set in the same place throughout the full video. The representation of the band is instantly gathered when the band is represented as young teenage boys. This possibly represents there lifestyle and there rebellious attitude which is refusing to grow up. The idea of the title been 'Boys don't cry' instead of 'Men don't cry' is the idea of maybe been represented as children because they don't want to grow up and have to deal with the typical stressful life of an adult. This can also be seen as just a simple representation of stereotypical male, that doesn't cry. The animation in the background shows a silhouette of themselves but as an older version. This may be indicating that there still are boys inside no matter how large there adult personality's tower over them.
Editing
The editing of this particular music video is rather new to the era that it was produced in. The animation is fairly well presented in a way that is understandable. The animation in the background helps to create a visual lyrical form of dialog which plays along in sequence with the lyrics and music.

Conventions of a mordern Music Video
Performance – How the video is acted out and how the characters act.
Lyrical Representation - How the words are put together to help form the narrative and also represent certain characters within the diagesis.
Narrative – Key to a lot of music videos, the narrative is often formed by the lyrical representation.
Lyrical Interpretation – How the words are put together for the viewer to make sense of and understand what the musician was trying to say.
During my year studying Media Studies I have learnt about the several different conventions to different forms of media. Magazines, Film and now Music Videos. Conventions of the video is dependant on the genre of the music but are generally similar. Here are some common Conventions of a modern day music video;
- Music videos usually cut to the beat.
- Abstract which is visual imagery which represents the mood, tone or feel. For example the colour red to indicate love and romance or opposed to anger and blood.
- Graphic matches which means that the movement, shape or colour is continued through to the next shot for example in the first shot their may be the colour blue used then in the second shot there would be an image of the sea to link the two colours together.
- Continuity editing or montage editing- the use of shot reverse or eye line match. Or the use of a variety of imagery shots to create a montage.
- Imagery which means the artist interoperate the lyrics with the action performed.
Specific Features
- There is often intertextual reference (to films, TV programmes, other music videos, etc)
- There is frequently reference to the notion of looking (screens within screens, telescopes, etc) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.
- Music Videos demonstrate genre characteristics (eg stage performance in metal video, dance routine for boy/girl band)
- There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals (either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting.)
- The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close-ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work (a visual style.)
- There is frequently reference to the notion of looking (screens within screens, telescopes, etc) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.
- There is often intertextual reference (to films, TV programmes, other music videos, etc)
Different Genre Conventions
Indie
Basic conventions of Indie music videos,
-Usually shows the band performing at a gig or concert.
-Cuts between shots of the band and other shots.
-Has a separate plotline which unfolds separately from the band performing.
-Close-ups of the band members performing. Also close-ups of their guitars and drums.
-Dark lighting and colours, sometimes completely black and white with no vibrant colours.
Hip Hop/Rap
-Basic conventions of hip hop/rap music videos.
Usually features and focuses on the main artist.
-A party or night club atmosphere.
-Lots of dancing.
-Usually features women who accompany the main artist of the song.
Bright vibrant colours.
-Close-up shots focusing on artist.
-Use of brand names and expensive houses/cars.
-Expensive jewellery and clothing
The History of Music Videos
‘’ In 1894 when sheet music publishers still ran the music business, Edward B. Marks and Joe Stern hired electrician George Thomas and various performers to promote sales of their song The Little Lost Child. Thomas projected a series of still images on a screen simultaneously with live performances in what became a popular form of entertainment known as the illustrated song. ‘’
- this is an extract from an article I found from the internet. It explains just how music videos began and where everything first started. Once the potential was seen within the music video, a small band called ‘talkies’ came along in 1926 and produced a small range of ‘video shorts’. These can be considered some of the earliest music videos.
In 1964, ‘the Beatles’ were rising to fame at an incredible rate and gathered huge audiences. Once they had become aware of there success, they released there first feature film which was considered as a mock documentary which gave the fans a chance to understand there lifestyle whilst at the same time, promoting and marketing there record. If fans didn’t get a chance to see them live, they would get the next closest thing to it, been shown how life was like for them and them fame.
Modern day music has changed extremely erratically. Any music today, has essentially already got a music video. This is because of the recent change in conventions of music videos and what is expected of it now.
Throughout my research I have learnt how music videos firstly started and why they began to produce them. I have also learnt how the Beatles uniquely marketed there music video so that audiences and fans would feel enticed within there lifestyle.

Possible music video to do
Corner
Words & Music by Allie Moss
When your world trembles and quakes
And your footing suddenly shifts and shakes
Take my hand
Well hide in the corner, hide in the corner
Take my hand
Well hide til its over, til its all over
We have choices to make
We have promises that we cant break
There is nothing left to lose
So hold on to me,
Possible music video songs
I think it might have taken
too long
for me to feel oh
whats that you said about it the right time
to discover everything, everything
that I can recognize
oh
before the thoughts break off
whats that you said?
I find an easy way out
collapsed at attention at the sight of your mouth
and its a shame to keep on
oh
when its not on the right time to discover
everything, anything
I see in your eyes
oh
before the lights break on
whats that you said?
theres only, theres only
there can only be you
theres only, theres only
there can only be you
this is all taking so long
I cant recall what
I used to say about it
and all thats left to discover
and these thoughts that I meditate
for a long lines
oh
to make the thoughts break off
what was it I said?
there is only, there is only
there can only be you
there is only, there is only
there can only be you
